The first American history of the American Revolution based on documentary evidence, a "scarce and important volume." (Sabin) Bernard Hubley, Jr. (1754–1810), of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was appointed a first lieutenant of the German Battalion in August, 1776, and was promoted to captain in February, 1778. He retired in January, 1781, and after the war moved to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1805 he published the first volume of the present work, based on the unpublished papers of his fellow officers and those given to him by General Edward Hand. This first volume begins with the Boston Tea Party and ends with the actions of the Continental Congress in October, 1775. Projected by him to be a multi-volume work, only this first volume was published before his death in 1810.
