Description
A very well done portrait of a wealthy, possibly, aristocratic, lady. The work is oil on cradled wood panel, and is signed. It is presented in a gilt frame, possibly a liner from a larger, more ornate frame. According to an apocryphal telling by the owner, the subject is the first Mrs. Astor (Caroline Webster Schermerhorn) and was said to have hung in the Astor mansion (Beechwood) in Newport. While a compelling story and while the subject does bear an uncanny resemblance to Mrs. Astor, there is no documentary evidence to support this. Measures: H 12 3/4" x W 10 1/4" Sight: 10 5/8" x 8 1/2" Provenance: Ex-Newport RI private collection.
