Footnotes: William Aiken Walker described himself as 'an artist and teacher of languages', being fluent in both French and Spanish. It is therefore no surprise that over the years he would travel throughout much of America and Cuba, with many of his works documenting the landmarks, landscapes and people he encountered. Throughout the 1880s, Walker produced a vast quantity of paintings that depicted the lives and work of the African American community on the southern plantations. Both this and lot 161 are classic examples of these pictures, which are widely considered to be Walker's trademark works.
