Sterndale/Bombay/1885' (verso) oil on canvas 46 x 30.8cm (18 1/8 x 12 1/8in). Footnotes: Robert Armitage Sterndale was a British naturalist, statesman and fellow of the Zoological Society of London. At the age of seventeen, Sterndale moved to India to work for the East India Company. Having a keen interest in natural history and geography, he was fascinated by the habitat that surrounded him and as a result he joined the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society in it's founding year, in 1883. It is believed that the idea of starting a journal was conceived by him. In the years that followed, Sterndale published several books documenting his experiences and observations of the wildlife in India, including; 'Natural History of the Mammalia of India and Ceylon, Seonee, or Camp Life on the Satpura Range' and 'Denizens of the Jungles'. The latter being a series of sketches illustrating the form and behaviour of the wildlife.
