Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Handsome seated pre-Columbian dog effigy spouted vessel with incised facial features including almond shaped eyes and a grinning mouth, protruding snout and perky ears. The dog is depicted seated but has a hint of dynamic pose as though waiting for scraps to fall from a nearby supper table. Wonderfully rendered vessel in the form of a watchdog to protect the deceased in the afterlife, carry offerings, and to symbolize abundance since dogs were not only treasured for their loyalty but for nourishment. Size 8 1/2" H x 9" L x 4 1/4" W
Condition
Head broken and repaired from several pieces, nice root marks and manganese deposits throughout.
