Stretcher size 23 1/4 x 33 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 28 1/4 x 38 1/2 in.
Polish-born artist Jan van Chelminski attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1875. He worked and traveled across Europe until 1895 when he moved to New York. His works often feature military history, with subjects ranging from the Napoleonic Wars to the First World War. Works by the artist have been displayed in the American Art Galleries, and have been owned by wealthy collectors such as William Shaw, and New York Senator F.S. Gibs.
