Impressive Regency Sterling Silver Entree Dish on Old Sheffield Plate Warming Stand
the dish hallmarked London, 1819-20, by Joseph Angell I, of serpentine-fluted oval form with elaborate floral acanthus banding and stirrup handle en suite, the lid and plateau richly engraved with the arms of General Sir Miles Nightingall, KCB (1768-1829), presented on a conforming old Sheffield plate warming stand with acanthus scroll handles and feet.

Notes: General Sir Miles Nightingall joined the army in 1787 and served in India and later Saint Domingue, where he orchestrated the evacuation of Port-au-Prince in 1798. He next served in the penal colony of New South Wales (declining the governorship in 1809) and then commanding a division of British forces in the Iberian Peninsular War. His final assignment was back in India as commander-in-chief of the Bombay Army 1816-1819. In his retirement he served as M.P. for Eye, Suffolk until his death. He married, in 1800, Florentia Elizabeth Darrell, and was made Knight Commander of the Order of Bath in 1815; the arms of both his wife and the order are represented in the full achievement of arms on this handsome piece.
