Description
GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant"), as General of the Army of the United States. [Washington, D.C.], 15 February 1868. With initialed autograph endorsement by HANCOCK, Winfield Scott, April 1872.One page, folio, 5 x 8 1/8 in. Toning to edges, creased along old folds, some soiling. Docketed and endorsed on integral leaf. On "Headquarters Army of the United States" letterhead. In this letter to General Hancock, General Grant introduces him to a boyhood friend, Mr. E. A. Collins of Davenport, IA. He writes, "Any attention shown Mr. Collins will be appreciate by him and will be regarded as a personal favor to me." Hancock's endorsement signed ("W.S.H."), St. Paul, MN, April 1872. In full: "This letter is Confidential; but it shows the kind of terms Genl G and I were on at the date of the letter."This lot is located in Cincinnati.Property from the Augustana Collection
