Description
[POLITICS IN AMERICA]. Attention Democrats! N.p., 8 April 1867.8 x 11 in. printed broadside (significant tearing and separation with abundant taped repair to verso, chipping to edges, some spots of discoloration). Body text boldly begins by asking Democratic voters if they intend to vote for the "mongrel, hermaphrodite ticket" that was chosen by an earlier convention. Broadside goes on to attack the earlier convention, calling its proceedings fraudulent and asking voters, "Can you...fawningly lick the hand that smites you? Where's your manhood? Where's your independence?" Though it is unclear exactly who made up the "mongrel, hermaphrodite ticket" lambasted in this broadside, there are various references and phrases throughout that could point to several figures, including "political Blondin," "the great 'bell-wether' of the 2nd District," and "Federal bayonets sent to the polls in '63."The 1868 Democratic Convention held at Tammany Hall headquarters in New York selected Horatio Seymour of New York and Francis C. Blair of Missouri as Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates for the 1868 Presidential Election.
