Title: Pre-Columbian Taíno/Arawak cultures detailed zemi-faced pounder

Date/Period: 1000 to 1300 AD

Dimension: 12 inches in height (or length)

Materials: Granite

Provenance: A very solid, probably two-handed, zemi-faced pounder made of granite and weighing 6 lbs. 9 oz. This pounder is from Hispaniola (probably in the Dominican Republic), Greater Antilles Islands, and was made with the classical Taíno face with hollow eyes,open mouth, detailed facial characteristics, and especially the dual ears. Many zemis have duality properties which conforms to the Taíno belief system in the duality of nature and spirits. There has been a surge in the interest of Taíno art as many Taíno descendants are claiming their patrimony. Most Taíno culture was decimated with the introduction and spread of European common diseases. Literature: "The Taínos: Rise and Decline of the People Who Greeted Columbus" I hope to find a stand among my collection that can be adapted to display this beautiful piece. This will be included with this lot. Provenance: by descent from the family of a Northeast US collector. Guaranteed authencity.
