Item Details
Description
(1892 - 1944) RAF Air Chief Marshal, served as a Royal Flying Corps pilot and squadron commander during the First World War. An aggressive combatant during the Battle of Britain, he carried these tactics forward to air sweeps over occupied France and replaced Sholto Douglas as head of Fighter Command in late 1942. In August 1943, Leigh-Mallory was appointed commander-in-chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force for the Normandy invasion. His tough tactics were praised by Montgomery and he was posted to South East Asia Command but was killed in an air crash while en route to Burma. Excessively rare and bold, bright blue ink signature 'T. Leigh-Mallory' on 4.5 x 1.25 in. slip, mounted beneath a modern printed color portrait. Very fine.
