Marshall Maynard Fredericks (1908-1998) Bronze plaque of sheep. He is known in America and abroad for his monumental figurative sculpture, public memorials and fountains, portraits, and animal figures. Fredericks is most famous for the iconic "Spirit of Detroit" sculpture in Downtown Detroit, yet his sculptures can be found in more than 150 public and corporate locations. He joined Cranbrook faculty in 1932 and was known as an inspirational sculptor. Fredericks was the recipient of many American and foreign awards for his artistic and humanitarian achievements, including the National Sculpture Society's highest award, the Medal of Honor, in recognition of his distinguished body of works in this country and in Europe. He received the Gold Fine Arts Medal of the American Institute of Architects, Gold Medal of Honor of the Architectural League of New York, Gold Medal of Honor from the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, and the Henry Hering Medal from the National Sculpture Society. In 1966, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award.
