A 1796 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword
Circa 1800
With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, etched and gilt against a blued ground along its length over the forte on both sides (gilding and blueing worn, old surface rust patination) with pre-1801 royal arms and motto, and along the medial flat with 'FOR MY COUNTRY & KING' between foliate scrolls, a martial trophy beyond, regulation ormolu hilt (some loss of gilding) cast with foliage and engraved with owner's initials 'RAA' on the edge of the shell-guard, grip bound with twisted copper wire, and retaining much of its gilding
