Description
British Pattern 1822 Infantry Officer's Dress Sword, issued ca. 1845 to 1854. A very nice example of this historic sword. The ray skin covered wood grip remains tightly bound with wire, and the brass basket with royal cipher is completely intact and undamaged. One side of the basket folds upwards, and it has no issues either. A portepee is tied to the basket as well. The blade was made by the Wilkinson Sword Co., 32.5 in. long, and very nicely etched with an ornate filigree design and the royal crown. A gold proof mark is inset on the ricasso. The blade also bears the name of outfitter 'NAYLOR & SINFIELD PRESTON' on the reverse. The blade is beautiful - virtually untouched with no sign of any corrosion or other significant defects. Two types of scabbards were issued for this sword. Those made of brass were issued for use in the field whereas those manufactured in black leather with two brass mounts were for dress occasions. This scabbard (the latter type) shows the unavoidable chips to the surface of the leather. The center fitting is loose, and the drag has a few dings, else very good. An extremely fine example.
