European, oil on canvas, 19th century. A large-scale painting of Moses close to the picture plane in an attractive custom gilt wood frame. The handling of light and color is impressive, and the composition is striking, featuring a bust-length portrayal of Moses wearing a scarlet red cloak with the wind blowing his crown of wavy hair and voluptuous beard - a reference to the exodus from Egypt and the parting of the Red Sea (or Reed Sea). A special painting of the most important prophet of Judaism mounted in a lavishly gilded custom frame. Size (sight view): 28.375" L x 22.375" W (72.1 cm x 56.8 cm)
Please note: The gilding of the frame and the pigments of the painting have been tested via x-ray florescence. The gilding contains 75% gold and the pigments are of the period.
Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

Condition
Painting appears to have been restored. A few areas of inpainting, but none on the visage. Areas of slight craquelure are stable. Frame has some chips and fissures, but is otherwise intact and very attractive. Gilding was tested via x-ray florescence and contains 75% gold. Pigments were also tested via x-ray florescence and are consistent with the period.
