Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A splendid pottery cylinder vessel and one of the finer we have seen of the Copador style in a barrel-shape. Hand-painted in shades of orange, red and black with two panels, first with two lords in splendid regalia confronting each other, hands extended. Second panel is a single lord, standing in profile, left hand extended. Above these two panels sits a band of glyphs each a different head in profile, encircling the rim of the vessel and perhaps identifying to whom it belongs. Between the two panels are also large panels of large double glyphoids in a similar format to the top glyph band. Size: 7" W x 9.25" H (17.8 cm x 23.5 cm)
Residue analysis on vessels like this one show that they were used for drinking chocolate, a hugely popular and ritual practice amongst the Maya, especially the elite. The depiction of a ceremony on this vessel suggests that it may have played a role in such rituals and perhaps even sacrifices!
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Harry Wallace collection, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s, by descent to D.B., New Paltz, New York, USA
