Description
or Guinea Hen, pedestal style base, 4 1/2", signed, well known Seagrove, North Carolina potter, excellent.....Archie Teague (1935-1999) was the son of the potter James Teague and the grandson of the potter John Wesley Teague. He was the nephew of potters Charlie Teague and Duck Teague. He is the brother of potters Laura Teague Moore and Mildred Teague Moore. His wife, Yvonne, also had deep ties to the North Carolina pottery tradition. She was the great-granddaughter of William Henry Hancock and her father was the potter Homer Hancock. As a young man Archie worked with family. Later, in the 1950's he worked a year at CC Cole Pottery and in the late 1950's-early 1960's he worked 5 years at JB Cole Pottery. In the 1960's he also worked with ML Owens. In the 1960's he opened H. and T. Pottery with his father-in-law, Homer Hancock. He ran it for several years into the 1970's after his father-in-law died as A. Teague Pottery and he used an A. Teague stamp to mark his pots. He stopped potting to become a captain of the Asheboro Fire department and did not return to potting until 1986. From 1991 until his death in 1999 he ran A. Teague Pottery with his wife, Yvonne Hancock Teague. His sister Mildred Teague Moore also worked t at times. At the time of his death Archie had completed construction on a wood burning kiln and he was in the process of making pots for the first firing of his new kiln. He died before the first firing of that kiln.
