Description

SLAVERY - MAURITIUS: Philippe Jean de la Haye Duponsel (1752-1790) French slave trader established in Mauritius, which was called at that time, ''Isle of France''. An interesting and scarce letter related to slavery in the XVII century. A clean A.L.S., `Duonsel de la Haye´, two pages, 4to, Isle de France, 27th November 1777, to his brother, in French. De la Haye Duponsel reports on the situation in Mauritius, on the replacement of the Intendent of the island and mostly on the economical situation, stating in part `…des raisons de s´opposer à la remise des fonds provenant du loyer des noirs. This opposition will undoubtedly not take long to be lifted... We have just significantly reduced the price of local grains from our islands, which we only pay in three installments, which is causing considerable disruption in the affairs of the colonists…´) Very small overall minor age wear.
