Alessandro Pianon (Italian, 1931-1984). "Pulcino" Murano glass bird, ca. 1960s. Not signed as was customary for Pianon's "Pulcini". As a rule, these are not signed. A mid-century modern iconic art glass sculpture, Alessandro Pianon's Murano glass bird named "Pulcino" meaning young chicken or chick, with copper legs and feet as well as multicolored Murrine glass eyes and an endearingly voluminous body. The texture of the bird's bright orange body creating the effect of feathers is also marvelous. "Pulcino" truly brings a smile to one's face with its bulbous body, skinny copper legs, mesmerizing eyes, and upturned beak. Truly a wonderful art glass sculpture by Alessandro Pianon in the 1960s, the magical and deliciously whimsical "Pulcino"! Size: 9.25" H (23.5 cm)

Murano glass, named for Italy's island of Murano, has been created for centuries, and Alessandro Pianon emerged from this rich glassmaking tradition in the mid 20th century. In 1956, the glass manufacturer Vetreria Vistosi hired Pianon to create the company logo. Happy with Pianon's logo design, Vistosi then hired him as a designer and he designed several collections for the company, the best known being his "Pulcino" (plural "Pulcini") bird sculptures.
