Western Europe, France, Dieppe region, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning elephant ivory lidded jar carved in the form of a flower vase - the cylindrical body is sheer enough for light to illuminate the interior! The flowers are intricately rendered, and the base contains a carved flower. Dieppe ivory carving refers to a particular style of intricate ivory carving that originated in the French seaport town of Dieppe in the 17th century, fueled by ivory imported from Africa. These carvings were highly detailed and often portrayed scenes from mythology, religion, literature, or everyday life. They were typically small in size and were prized as luxury items and status symbols. Size: 3" Diameter x 3" H (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm)

The flower base disc is completely loose and could be glued in place. Minor nicks to ivory lid but overall excellent condition. Jar body exterior is pristine condition.
