The present painting is based on a lost model originally by either Ambrosius Benson (1490 - 1550) or Adriaen Isenbrant (1480 - 1551) in Bruges in the early 16th century, and known from many versions of greatly varying quality (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. XI, Leiden 1974, p. 89, no. 190, pl. 140).

The panel is in good condition.
The varnish is thick, scuffed and opaque.
Abrasions are visible around the edges where the frame has rubbed.
There is a retouched split, running horizontally from the lower right edge far appr. 11 cm, strengthened on the reverse with a batten.
Dark tones are worn in parts, particularly to the background.
Inspection under UV light is hindered by the opaque varnish but it is possible to see:
-the restoration to the panel spit, on the lower right edge
-infilling and retouching to the abrasions along the edges
-retouching to the background, upper centre, above the head of the Madonna
-restorations to the background on the centre left and right edges
-infilling to the red dress of the Madonna
Further restoration cannot be excluded.
