Description
Hutchinson, James (1932-2023) Florida Artist Painting. Oil on canvas board - signed lower right. This early painting by Hutchinson was painted when he was learning to paint with Backus at the Backus Art Colony. A meandering stream carves through the beach sand to reach the ocean. One towering palm tree stands out against the cloudy background. Board measures 16x20 framed to overall size of 21x25. Florida Artist Hall of Fame Member - A.E. "Beanie" Backus's brother in law. Hutchinson informally learned at the early age of 17 about Backus' style of painting and often visited his studio residence. As Hutchinson independently developed as an artist, he lived with the Seminole Indians in Brighton and Big Cypress reservations from 1959-1964 and received an Arthur Vining Davis Foundations grant for 50 paintings of the Seminole tribe that the State of Florida now owns and circulates from the capitol to various state venues and museums.
