Description
late 19th century, 63 x 86 cm, North Persia, Varamin
EILAND, MURRAY L., Oriental Rugs From Pacific Collections. San Francisco 1990, no. 52
Woven in a horizontal format, this Afshar bag face probably once belonged to a khorjin. A large red diamond lies at the centre of the midnight blue field and is flanked by four white, geometrically stylised palmettes at the sides. The palmettes are filled with tiny crosses in diverse colours. Twelve small human figures and several birds are distributed across the field. A virtually indistinguishable bag face is published in the exhibition catalogue, "Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections", where it was attributed to the Kerman region. However, we believe that like our bag face, it was made in the Varamin area.
Signs of age and wear, uniformly low pile, replaced selvedges.
