Description
Envelope addressed to Miss Phebe A. Steele of Jasper, Texas. [1863?]. With green Confederate 10-cent stamp featuring Jefferson Davis. With inscription reading: "These letters with a great many others were captured by our Fleet Near Vicksburg Miss." Pencil inscription to verso reads, " From Mrs. Apple 3/7/27- Dr Mear].
The recipient, Phebe Ann Steele (1846-1913) lived in Jasper, Texas with her parents and 6 siblings. She eventually married Walter W. Scott (1849-1911), also of Texas, having two children together. It is not clear who was writing to the teenage Phebe during the Civil War, perhaps one of her siblings or other acquaintances.
