Description

Autograph letter signed to Ann H. Cresson of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Georgetown, Colorado, 16 June 1867. 5 pages, 8vo, 4 ½ x 7 ¼ in. With original envelope with red 3-cent stamp with hand cancellation. Includes 6 contemporary newspaper clippings that were originally enclosed with the letter.

The author writes home while stationed on the Colorado frontier, possibly in the military. In his letter he includes a lengthy description of raids and attacks on Indians against Anglo-Americans: "I suppose you eastern people get to hear very little of our Indian troubles but here they are. The absorbing topic every day brings some new news of Indian atrocities, last evening we have word that Engineer Hill one of the main men of the U.P.R.R. was killed and scalped, and also of some other horrible outrages." He continues with his opinions of how General Sherman is handling the situation: "Gen Sherman has pretty much lost the esteem and respect which he held in the hearts of the people…by the arbitrary uncalled for and unwise manner in which he is managing Indian affairs & instead of affording to emigrants + ranchmen in the infested parts all the protection possible he seems to turn a deaf ear to all appeals at the first breaking out. Gov. Hunt telegraphed to him asking authority to raise a Regt. to fight Indians, his reply was "what Indians do you propose to fight." That answer when every day brought reports of ranches & stations and whole wagon trains being surprised and burnt, and men, women and children being killed and tortured and butchered in every conceivable manner. I think needs no comment."

Included with the letter, the author encloses "an additional from yesterdays Register also some other slips. This is one days news." Six clippings are included, all with snippets and longer stories of Indian attacks, including a report on the murder and scalping of Mr. L.L. Hill, Chief Division Engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad", an article on the "Burning of Rock Creek Station", and a negative opinion piece on General Sherman.
