Provenance
Accompanied by a note, "Chair given to Samuel Burden-Smith (1854-1942) by a member of Stephen Girard family, when he went with a member of his family to call. He sat in the little chair during his visit. Upon leaving he was asked if he liked the chair-he said he did. Someone said 'You like that chair don't you Sammy.' On his return home he found the chair had been sent directly to his house." This may refer to a visit to the Green Street home of Girard's nephew, Jean August Girard (1808-1870) and his wife Ellen (1806-1899). The chair is similar to a set of chairs in the Stephen Girard Collection made by Daniel Trotter.
