SMALL CHIPPENDALE SLANT-LID DESK, POSSIBLY A SALESMAN'S SAMPLE
New England, Late 18th Century
In cherry. Slant lid encloses a finely fitted serpentine interior with valanced pigeonholes, drawers and half column-form letter slides. Case with three graduated full-width drawers, flat bracket feet and brass bail handles at sides. Upper drawer flanked by pull-out drawer supports and the two lower drawers by pull-out fluted columns that function as lateral document drawers.
Height 18". Width 17.5". Depth 11.25".

Lid replaced using original hinges. Restoration of interior and base in 1982 by William H. Woodhead, Somerville, Massachusetts. Includes extensive and detailed documentation and photographs of the restoration.
