Description
Possibly Ohio, poplar. With two candle drawers over a large drawer, and on turned feet; the interior with a till. Retains its original paint and hinges. 30.5" high, 47.5" wide, 20.5" deep. On the back of this chest is painted ?H. Huber Wakarusa Ind.? This is almost certainly a shipping label used when the chest was shipped, probably via rail, to Wakarusa in Elkhart County, Indiana. A Henry Huber (1849-1923) was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, but his family moved to Putnam County shortly thereafter. He married in 1870 and by the mid-1880s had relocated to Indiana, and landing in Elkhart County by 1910. Henry?s youngest daughter, Hattie (1890-1953), married and spent most of her life in Elkhart County. Additionally, Henry?s brother, George, died in Wakarusa in 1923. Another blanket chest with front-mounted candle drawers sold at Forsythes' Auctions (Ohio), May 21, 2023, lot 159A.
