MCDONNELL XV-1 CONVERTIPLANE CONTRACTOR'S MODEL. Mixed material on wood base, [Wesco Models], late 1960s, wingspan 10 inches, fuselage 11 inches, 9 inches tall, plaque on base reads: 'McDonell XV-1 Convertiplane.' The McDonnell XV-1 was an experimental convertiplane developed by McDonnell Aircraft for a joint research program between the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army to explore technologies for a vehicle that could take off and land like a helicopter but fly at faster airspeeds. As such, it was the first American compound design. The present detailed model was produced for McDonnell probably by Wesco models and includes a freely rotating three-bladed rotor.
