MARTIN MARIETTA X-24A CONTRACTOR'S MODEL. Mixed materials on metal base, Southwick Models, c. 1968, wingspan 4 1/4-inches, fuselage 7 3/4-inches, 9 1/4-inches tall, base is blank. The Martin Marietta X-24 was an experimental aircraft from the joint Unites States Air Force/NASA program PILOT, created to test lifting body concepts. The X-24A, which was flown 28 times, demonstrated that a Space Shuttle vehicle could be landed unpowered. The fastest speed it achieved was 1,036 mph, or Mach 1.6 and the maximum altitude was 71,400 feet. The program was continued with the rebuilt X-24B.
