Route 9W Fragments". Acrylic and collage on canvas with depicting a portrait of Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya of Toro before an abstracted landscape of collaged map fragments. This work was purchased by the consignor directly from the artist in Harlem, NY in 1973 for $2,000 and was included in The New York Culture Center Exhibition "BLACKS: USA: 1973"; original exhibition label affixed to stretcher verso. Russ Thompson (African-American, b. Jamaica 1922). Thompson was part of the late 60's Black Emergency Cultural Coalition along with Benny Andrews. During this period, Hilton Kramer of the New York Times was quoted about an African-American art exhibition, "only one - Russ Thompson - seemed to me to show any originality of form and ideas..." His work can be found in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, MOMA, New York and the Smithsonian. Dimensions: 66.75" high x 90.5" wide. Condition: Horizontal tear lower left from extreme edge measuring 1.75" long. A few small scratches and nicks lower right and lower left. Otherwise in overall good condition.
