A group of three vintage hand-sewn skirts. A dark plum/brown silk sarong skirt embroidered with a dragon motif pattern, with brown brocade trim; total open width at waists approx. 51in; length from top of waistband 31 1/2in (some spots of staining/fading near the waistband, but overall very good). Together with a green silk sarong skirt with "forbidden stitch" applique decoration and silk brocade ribbon trim; total open waist approx. 43in, length approx. 41 1/2in (discoloring/staining to waist band; small scattered stains; appliques loose; but overall good). And, a dragon-embroidered black net overskirt; total open width 60in x 30 1/2in long (lacking waist band and ties). FROM THE FAMILY OF REV. CHARLES HARTWELL (1825-1905) and Lucy Estabrook Stearns Hartwell (1827-1883); their children Charles Stearns Hartwell (1855-1931), Emily Susan Hartwell (1859-1951), and Carrie Amelia Hartwell Tupper (1864-1959); Congregational missionaries and philanthropists in Foochow (Fuzhou), China, 1850s-1930s.
