The large fan of brown silk with hand-painted floral design and carved wood staves, 12 3/4in h x 23in w (wear to paint; tears, soiling). The stone bead decorated handled fan case of peach silk on one side, embroidered with birds on a vine; the other side with embroidered script/poem on cream silk,12 1/2in; with 20th century painted fan inside (some fading, embroidery losses). FROM THE FAMILY OF REV. CHARLES HARTWELL (1825-1905) and Lucy Estabrook Stearns Hartwell (1827-1883); their children Charles Stearns Hartwell (1855-1931), Emily Susan Hartwell (1859-1951), and Carrie Amelia Hartwell Tupper (1864-1959); Congregational missionaries and philanthropists in Foochow (Fuzhou), China, 1850s-1930s.
