Item Details
Description
For your consideration is this 1865 1st edition of "The History of Playing Cards with Anecdotes of their use in Conjuring, Fortune-Telling, and Card-Sharping" edited by the late Rev. Ed. S. Taylor, B. A. and others. The book contains an impressive collection of information on cards, the tools of magic, and prognostication, covering topics like the history of playing cards, Tarot, and the ancient Roma people's use of cards for divination, as well as how playing cards spread throughout South and East Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe, particularly in France and England. It also discusses gambling, fortune-telling, sleight of hand, and the application of cards in various scientific fields. The book shows a red bound cover with a gold gilt image of coins, cards and dice on the front. The spine shows gold gilt lettering reading, "The History of Playing Cards and Their Use In Conjuring and Card-Sharping". The book shows wear from its age and use over the years with worn corners and shelf wear. The spine is still tightly bound and no obvious signs of damage are present. Interior pages are free of foxing and browning. The book measures 7" L x 4 3/4" W x 2 1/8" D and weighs approximately 1 pound and 6 ounces.
