oil and tempera on wood panel; accompanied by a letter of authentication from Willem L. van de Watering of Wouter Janssen Gallery, dated 20 November, 1996, attributing the present work to the Master of the Embroidered Foliage, early 16th century 10 1/4 x 7 3/4 in. (26 x 19.7 cm.), Frame: 15 1/2 x 13 in. (39.4 x 33 cm.) Provenance: with Henry James Spiller. London; sold Christie's, London, May 15, 1936 [lot 95, as "German School"]; the Pacific Palisades estate and collection of Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt S. Pardee, the founder of Pardee Construction Company
Condition
An area of possible inpainting to the right of her neck, approximately 2 x 1/2 inches, with 2-3 smaller possible touchups. Two shallow, pinhead-sized chips to the surface of paint on her red robe, beneath Christ. Slight frame wear visible at borders. Craquelure throughout. Not examined out of frame.
