Description
Lady Guanyin Bodhisattva, probably 15th-16th c. Depicted standing, features in repose, holding a vase of nectar, with diadem, long necklaces of beads, delicately rendered drapery, in the original pigment with remnants of some gilding. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, including the lotus base. Retaining the majority of her color. 38" tall overall. Shrinkage crack on back from base to shoulder, minor loss to diadem, a few edge chips at bottom. Rubbed at belly to raw wood, from veneration. Evaluated by Norman Hurst of Boston at $25,000 in 2008. This figure has been in the consignor's family for over a century. She has never been professionally cleaned, but she was properly displayed and stored, coming to us in a wooden crate.
