Portrait of a Mariner, oil on panel, unsigned, inscribed on old label verso: "For Leonard & Kit. Anthony Morse, Grandmother Babbitt's brother, painter unknown, very early about 1860" (in fact, clothing indicates about 1830). Depicts a stolid gentleman with blue eyes, dark hair and sideburns, black stock and gold anchor pin, his right hand tucked in his jacket. In the original black painted molded frame, OS: 29 1/2" x 26", SS: 22 1/2" x 19", a few small spots lower left, short crack lower center.Captain Anthony Morse (1793-1875) was a Brunswick, Maine ship builder. If his vewssels did not find a ready sale, he took them to sea and commanded his craft until he found a purchaser. For several years he engaged in a general transportation business between Europe, South America and the West Indies. Accompanied by his son George, he sailed to Wales in 1839 and brought back rails for the first railway built in Maine. He is buried at the Growstown Cemetery, Brunswick, Maine.
