Description
A lovely carved wooden ceremonial ladle known as wunkirmian or wakemia which translates as spoon associated with feasts. Such large spoons are badges of prestige acknowledging an individual woman for her incomparable generosity. This example features a finely carved anthropomorphic head and has a well handled surface suggesting field use. The Ladle measures 22 x 5 inches. Dan peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. Provenance: Dr Noble & Jean Endicott collection, New York, also a private NYC collection.
