Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Late / Post Maya or Mixtec people, ca. 900 to 1500 CE. A hand carved tecali stone pendant with a pair of protruding nubs, possibly abstract heads, and a suspension hole bored into a corner on the verso. Tecali is a semi-precious stone similar to alabaster, it often glows when backlit, that has been used for centuries by Mexican artisans to create a variety of objects, including sculptures, jewelry, and decorative pieces that were often buried with the dead as offerings to the gods. While the motifs are vague, the color also had meaning - green was the source of life and sustenance, and many cultures famously the Maya, had an affinity for precious green stones. Size: 2" L x 1" W x 2" H (5.1 cm x 2.5 cm x 5.1 cm)
