Description
Rosewood J. H. Belter bed all original from The Dunleith Antebellum Mansion in Natchez MS, built in 1855. Great Provenance: The original owners of this bed were Sarah Surget Davis, granddaughter of Pierre Surget and of William Dunbar, and her husband, Alfred Vidal Davis I, grandson of Jose Vidal. The young couple were married in 1855 and spent an extended honeymoon in Philadelphia, New York, and Europe, where they bought furnishings and works of art for their home, Dunleith, in Natchez, which Davis had purchased and to which they eventually returned. It was during their honeymoon trip that they bought this Belter bed. After Sarah's death, Davis sold Dunleith and took his possessions back to the Vidal home outside Vidalia, Tacony plantation, where he lived for many years. When the Davis family sold Tacony, they took the bed and other furnishings with them to Natchez. Lillie Vidal Davis Boatner, granddaughter of Alfred Vidal I, owned the bed until her death in 1986 when ownership was passed down to her daughter, Katherine Chamberlain Boatner Blankenstein.
