Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid-20th century CE. A two-headed drum, known as a damaru (damru), made from wood with stretched skin painted green and cords tied to the center that dangle loosely, containing pellets that strike the drum faces when shaken. A red silk handle decorated with sterling silver dorje (vajra) shaped charms is tied around the center and from the end is a glass bead and an intricate "endless knot." From the knot is a lengthy and decorative cloth tassel known as a chopen, which flutters about as the drum is played. This silk chopen is comprised of three panels and fine embroidery in metallic threads that enhance the beauty of this sacred instrument. Such drums were used in both Buddhist tantric meditation and Hindu rituals as the instrument associated with Shiva. Size of drum: 3.6" Diameter x 3" H (9.1 cm x 7.6 cm); silk chopen sash: 16.75" L x 2.5" W (42.5 cm x 6.4 cm); silver quality: 95%
