Description
An early George II unmarked silver mounted cruet bottle, London circa 1730 The faceted square form clear glass bottle with a facet cut rising neck, the octagonal silver mounts with a short spout leading to an overlapping hinged domed octagonal lid surmounted by a ball finial. The triple C scroll handle with an upper shaped scroll junction with engraved hatched decoration. The mount base with panels of engraved hatched decoration alternating with rosettes, hatched panels to the lid and spout sides, one side of main mount with a vacant C scroll cartouche surmounted by a shell and a lozenge transected below all reserved with strapwork, the opposing side with an engraved mask below scroll section above a splayed shell. The underside of the spout with a ring punched cross moline.The handle with engraved with contemporaneous initials MTT (?) in mirror monogram. Height – 18.9 cm / 7.45 inches An oil and vinegar cruet of 1727 by Paul de Lamerie with very similar bottles including the shaped hatched junction between handle and neck mount is illustrated Schroder, T. (2009), British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean Museum. Oxford: Ashmolean Museum, fig. 134, p. 352-354. An oil and vinegar cruet of 1733 by Paul de Lamerie with very similar bottles is in the collection of Portland Art Museum (72.90A-C) An oil and vinegar cruet of 1723 with very similar bottles including the shaped hatched junction between handle and neck mount was sold Bonham’s New Bond Street, 23 Nov 2011, lot 184 (£18,750 incl. prem) An oil and vinegar cruet, put circa 1740 as with transposed marks of 1723 by Paul de Lamerie with very similar bottles was sold Christie’s New York, 19 Oct 2010, lot 150 ($10,625 incl. prem)
