Silver & Objects of Vertu
The October silver sale offers a previously unrecorded, interesting, and dated mid-19th century Chinese export silver mug, engraved for the Penang races of 1869. The date of 1869 is of note as this is the same year as the opening of the Suez Canal, which because of the considerable increase in trade in the years to follow saw the port of Penang grow to become the major entry port for British Malaya. Also offered is a very rare Irish Stuart period tankard, by the most prominent maker of late 17th and early 18th century Dublin, Thomas Bolton. In a private collection since 1982, it was subsequently recorded in Thomas Sweeney?s 1995 book Irish Stuart Silver, one of only 73 such tankards listed in the book and the earliest known for Bolton.
The October has a dedicated section for non-European silver, ranging from India, China, Burma, Persia, Iraq and Cambodia, all alongside a significant offering of British silver from the early period to modern.
