Description
"
Roman 1st cent. A.D. Bronze.
L. 6 13/16 in; 17.3 cm
Bag-shaped vessel with large, semioval spout. Low ring foot; concentric circles around a central dot on the underside. Profiled handle with plant motifs. Below it, the face mask of a young man wearing a conical cap, possibly Attis. The shape of the vessel is reminiscent of a wineskin and indicates that the jug was originally used to serve wine.
Handle and face mask reattached. The tip of one leaf at the base of the handle broken off. A minor dent on the vessel’s body. Foot with a small repair. Surface slightly corroded in places.
Formerly Coll. Prof. Hans Dahn (1919-2019), Lausanne; acquired 25 February 1953 from Pignatelli, Paris. See Dahn's list no 68.
