Description
Ancient Hellenistic Apulian Southern Italian ceramic terracotta askos, circa 350-330 B.C.E., the redware vessel hand-painted in glossy black with a seated female figure adorned in robes and jewelry holding a fan and open box, a cylindrical basket beside her and a fringed scarf above, with swirling foliate palmette design, stylized wave border above round foot, egg-and-dot border to neck below flaring rim, and ribbed top handle, with Sotheby's labels, together with a Japanese custom-made wooden box with fitted purple lined interior and hand-written calligraphy to lid. Askos: 8.25" H x 7" W x 6.25" D; box: 13.25" L x 12.5" W x 9.5" D. Provenance: From a 50 Madison Avenue estate; Sotheby's, New York, Antiquities, lot 127, December 5, 2007.
