Description
FADEN, William (1749 - 1836).
A Plan of the City and Environs of Philadelphia...
Engraved map of Nicholas Scull and George Heap's famous survey of Philadelphia and its environs.
London: Faden, 1777 (First State).
26 3/4" x 20 1/2" sheet.
The Best Map to Own to Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Published the year British forces occupied Philadelphia, William Faden's map of the Revolutionary capital is based on Nicholas Scull and George Heap's 1752 map of the city. Faden enlarged their plan of the city to accommodate the size of his folio atlas sheets, moved the finely detailed rendering of the Pennsylvania State House to the bottom, and added and updated information regarding place names, island forts, and river fortifications. The island between Hog Island and Mudd Island is unnamed and there southern coastline of the Delaware is incomplete, corresponding with the rare first state of the map. Tooley 69a, Nebenzahl #130, Snyder 47.
