N.B.
By the time Lilla Cabot Perry completed this work, she had become an influential figure in the Boston art world. She had studied with noted artists and teachers in her home city as well as in France, including Robert Vonnoh, Dennis Miller Bunker, Alfred Stevens, and Claude Monet, the latter with whom she was one of the few American students to develop a close relationship. She brought her American take on French Impressionism to Boston not only by exhibiting her brilliantly-colored landscapes and portraits, but also by promoting the work of French Impressionists, especially Monet, to American collectors. Outside of her portrait commissions, Perry regularly used members of her household as models. In the 1920s she painted a series of four seasonal depictions of her housekeeper, Marie, seated in front of a window at the Perry family summer home in Hancock, New Hampshire. The budding trees and lush greenery indicate that this work represents the New England springtime. Another painting in the series, Marie at the Window, Autumn was included in the exhibition Lilla Cabot Perry: A Retrospective (1969-70, The Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire; Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York; New Jersey State Museum, Trenton).
