Item Details
Description
1st item: Clarence Edward Zuelech (American/Ohio, 1904-1973) WPA-era charcoal drawing depicting African American men pushing a car in the foreground while other men labor behind them against an abstracted background, all rendered in broad strokes conveying the sense of feverish movement. Signed and dated "Zeulech '37". Matted and framed under glass in a bronzed-finished wood frame with ebonized sight edge. Sight - 9 1/2" H x 7 1/2"W. Frame - 18 5/8" x 14 5/8". Note: Little is known about Ohio artist Clarence Zeulech, who seemed to specialize in works on paper. His work was exhibited through the Works Progress Administration at the Cleveland Museum of Art's May Shows 1932-1936 and 1938-1940 and two of his drawings are in the collection of the National Gallery of Art. (Source: Museum records, Cleveland Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art).

2nd item: John Sloan (New York/Pennsylvania, 1871-1951) book illustration etching entitled Philip & Schoolmates from William Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage," Chapter 11, printed in an edition of 1500 by The Limited Editions Club, 1938. Signed in plate. With photocopied page from Peter Morse's "John Sloan's Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne of The Etchings, Lithographs, & Posters" affixed to backing. Housed under plexiglass in a mottled silvered wooden frame with black fillet and cream mat. Sight - 4 1/4" W x 6 1/2" H. Frame - 9 3/8" W x 11 1/8" H.

PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
