Description
"Castle in Ruins on a Promontory", pencil drawing showing hunters in a landscape with the titular castle ruins high above. Wove paper with watermark: W. M. J. Whatman / Turkey Mill / 1833. Copy of former auction catalog listing notes the provenance as from the estate of the artist. Edward Seager was born in England, came to Canada as a young man, and had moved to Boston by 1838. He made sketching trips including Cuba and Panama, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, to which he returned again and again. He was the first drawing and drafting master at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Sheet, approx. 12 1/4" x 10 1/4". Sight, approx. 9" x 6 1/2".
