Description
Entitled "Four Nudes". Numbered 21/25, lower left, signed and dated (1921?) in pencil, lower margin. The Philadelphia-born, Harvard educated artist studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, at the Academie Julian in Paris, living in Giverny during the war and painting in the impressionist tradition. (In his 1939 autobiography, he mentions seeing Monet over his garden wall.) He is credited with the birth of the WPA, having suggested to his friend Franklin D. Roosevelt the idea of a government sponsored mural and arts program. Unframed. Sheet size approx. 18 3/4" x 12 1/2" Sight, approx. 13 1/4" x 10".
